What I Know about … Little League Parents

Now every kid gets a trophy, which I think makes children lazy. It wasn’t like that when I was a kid. Athletic competition was fierce when I was growing up … yet I don’t believe in these crazy, insane Marinesergeant coaches. But I also don’t believe things should be handed to kids. There’s too much obsession with being the best or being a loser or misfit. Just go out there and try. Don’t feel bad about yourself if you’re trying—that’s what I tell my kids.

Sports are supposed to serve as an example of life for kids, and life doesn’t hand you trophies for doing nothing. I played Little League, and I’ll never forget the first game where I pitched. I struck out ten batters, and it was the best day of my life. I had a curveball a little early—you’re not supposed to have one at age 12, but I did. It’s one of my fondest life memories.
